A field measurement book (FMB) is a complete record of map data. It is stored in volumes by the State government at the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh tahsildar level. Also known as a sketch or an FMB sketch, it contains relevant information such as the location of the land, land type, the extent of the measures, and the date of the measurements taken.

What are the main components of a field measurement book sketch?

A field measurement book (FMB) sketch has individual survey number sketches maintained at a scale of 1:1,000 or 1:2,000. For each sub-division in the tehsil, there are different survey numbers, and each sub-division number belongs to a landowner. In other words, FMB shows the precise dimensions of the land or property. This is the reason for its importance to a buyer when it comes to purchasing a property. A FMB sketch helps verify the land measurements and boundaries of the property in each sub-division of the state.

  • G-line: An imaginary line that fixes the boundary lines and various points in an FMB sketch. It shows different sizes of triangles.
  • F-line: It shows the actual field boundaries in the outer lines of a FMB sketch. Its points are fixed with its offset distance from the G-line.
  • Subdivision lines: They show a small portion of land within a survey number. These lines are generally defined through a ladder in an FMB sketch.
  • Ladder: It shows the angle deviations in a property. It can also be used to convert the ladder details into electronic data to get the outline of an FMB sketch.
  • Extension lines: It shows the neighbouring field in a FMB.
  • Neighbouring field survey number: It shows the survey numbers of the neighbouring fields.

For a field measurement book (FMB), you may speak with the tahsildar office in your location or state. They will first survey the property or land. A written request has to be submitted to the Tahsildar concerned to survey the property or land. You can also get it online by visiting the online application link on Google. Select your district, taluk, or village, enter sub-division numbers and click submit.
